What is Social Media?
Believe it or not, there was a time when we had to wait weeks at a time to deliver and receive communication from loved ones--sometimes longer. Overtime we have evolved this process to a point where I can receive communication from across the world in literally seconds. While this has been advantageous in many ways, it's posed as a challenge in the sense that we are experiencing a huge storm of information. Let's explore.
We can go in several different directions with this topic but for today I will stick to social media. What is social media?
- Big Data- Social media is a large set of information that is only useful if it is properly filtered, analyzed and applied to business and/or personal life leading to a favorable outcome.
- Learning Resource- A lot of businesses are realizing that the power of social media goes far beyond finding customers to sell to. It is an excellent platform for feedback, information gathering, customer engagement and reputation management. For example, in my previous post about reputation management I mentioned how non-favorable posts can be learning opportunities. Maybe you start to notice a buzz on twitter about the price of your new yoga memberships being too high. If it gets too loud you can make adjustments and show your customers that their opinions matter.
- Advertising Platform- While many of our social handles may have been designed to 'keep in touch', today they have become powerful communication and visual tools for businesses to reach consumers. When information is gathered and analyzed, the next step would be to deliver relevant information in a timely manner that attracts your audience. In addition to that, getting your brand to stand out among competitors is important in today's environment where your customers are faced with thousands of messages on a daily basis.
Some may argue that the information age has induced a sensory overload while others insist that the alternative would be to revert back to the 'spoon fed' method of only receiving the news that a certain few deemed relevant to us all. Whatever your stance may be, my aim is to help you navigate your way through the choppy waves to make these digital concepts a bit more palatable.
